Measuring for Curtains
- A The exact width of your TRACK
- B The required FINISHED drop of your curtains
If you wish to install a new pole or track, we recommend that the track extends at least 6’’ either side of the window, and that the track sits 4’’ above the window (space allowing).
Please note that we make all allowances for fullness in curtains, hems and turnings when calculating fabric requirements. As a general rule we double the width of the track for pencil pleat curtains, multiply by 1 ½ times for tab top curtains, and multiply by 2.2 for goblet & pinch pleat curtains.
Measuring for Pelmets and Valances
- A The exact width of your track (or pelmet board)
- B The size of your returns (the length that the track protrudes from the wall)
- C The required depth of your pelmet / valance. If depth is not provided this is generally 1/5th or 1/6th of your curtain length. If a shaped valance is required, the smallest point of the valance is usually 7’’ shorter than the deepest point.
Again, the same calculations apply to the working out of fabric requirements. It is, however, sometimes advisable to add one more width to your valance than to your curtains to ensure the valances reach around the returns.
Measuring for Roman Blinds
Blinds can be fitted either inside or outside the window recess:
- A For an outside blind, measure the window width allowing 3’’ either side
- B Measure the required full drop of the blind
- C For an inside blind measure the recess width at intervals from the top to the bottom. Take the smallest size, and deduct ½’’. (this is in order for the blind to move smoothly)
- D Measure the exact drop from the top to the sill
Please note that we allow for a false fold to be visible when the blinds are completely lowered. Please state if you do not require this.
